Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression (PPD) impacts 15% of mothers and exists outside of minor “postpartum blues,” although it can be dismissed as such. PPD can cause appetite loss, sleep disturbance, feelings of worthlessness, and even suicidal ideation. In addition to adverse effects on maternal health, PPD can also impair fetal cognitive development. Being aware of risk factors (anxiety, youthful pregnancy, low income, etc.) and self-advocating for help and treatment are the best ways for mothers to avoid severe health consequences as a result of PPD.
